CME announced this week that it is launching the world’s first index-based hockey futures market. Each team will have an index tracking its performance throughout the season, with the price moving in real time based on what happens in each game. Play-by-play statistics such as goals and saves add points to the index, while a penalty or a goal allowed subtracts them, turning every shift into a small, continuous repricing of how a team is actually doing.

The pitch is that sponsors, arena vendors, and other companies exposed to a team’s performance can now hedge that exposure directly. Rangers season ticket holders can rejoice now that disappointment, for the first time in franchise history, is a properly priced asset class.

Contracts are expected to go live on September 28 ahead of the upcoming NHL season, if all goes well in regulatory review. The structure of a futures contract layered on top of a continuously-priced index separates the index from sports betting where a fixed-odds bet settles once at the end of a game (or the end of a season for a futures bet). The CFTC would regulate the NHL index as a derivative, though forty-four state attorneys general have recently argued that the CFTC has no authority over sports-related event contracts. CME insists this is hedging, not betting, a distinction that will matter enormously to regulators and not at all to the guy at the bar explaining his portfolio losses as a power play problem.
