For decades, some of the most reliable business models in consumer finance were built not on a better product, but on a higher tolerance for friction. Banks could pay next to nothing on deposits because moving your money meant paperwork, an afternoon at a branch, and a new routing number nobody had memorized. Travel sites could clip a fee at every step because comparing forty options was more work than clicking the first one. Friction wasn’t a bug. It was the moat.

As of this week, Meta's Muse, the personal AI agent which debuted earlier this month, has made a mockery of friction. It can check out for users across PayPal's global merchant network, effectively turning it from an assistant that sees your money into an indefatigable one that can cancel subscriptions, haggle over bills, switch policies, and of course spend money. This spooked markets. The S&P 500's financial sector slid, Charles Schwab and LPL Financial each fell more than 6%, while semiconductor makers rallied to a Nasdaq record. Amazon moved first, blocking Muse's shopping bot from its site days ago.

This, of course, is not the first AI agent to do this to financial stocks this year. In February, Altruist's tax-planning agent Hazel wiped out more than $20b in custodian and broker market cap in a single day.

Fittingly, it is also Fat Bear Week at Katmai, seven days devoted to celebrating brown bears that spent the summer converting salmon into blubber. Wall Street's incumbents, call them corpulent, rotund, or even Rubenesque, have spent decades fattening themselves on deposits, fees and customer inertia. Muse, and competitors like Hazel, Instinct and their descendants may be about to make hibernation considerably less comfortable.
