Chipmaker Becomes Banker
Nvidia has spent the AI boom selling the shovels. The time has come - it seems - for it also to finance the mine. The company is increasingly using its formidable balance sheet to support the very customers buying its chips, providing lease backstops, residual-value guarantees and even “customer of last resort” arrangements that help data-center operators secure financing.
The numbers have begun to look like a side career in investment banking. Nvidia has recently provided potential support tied to roughly $230b of lease and residual-value obligations, while also holding $72.5b in public and private-company stakes. None of this is necessarily reckless - the company also had more than $80b in cash and marketable securities - but it does mean Nvidia is no longer merely exposed to demand for AI infrastructure. It is increasingly exposed to the financing, asset values and solvency of the people building it.
The logic for Nvidia is clear. Big Tech is already laden with enormous data-center commitments, borrowing costs are rising, and Nvidia wants a broader customer base than a handful of hyperscalers. If it falters, Nvidia could discover that being the chip supplier, shareholder, guarantor and emergency customer all at once is less a diversified business model more four seats at the same table.
